Becoming Catholic — Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process for adults who desire to join the Catholic faith and for those seeking more information on the Catholic Church.

The initiation process had been called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The process was renamed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) in 2021. The OCIA includes many rights that follow a particular order, hence the name change. The word "Order" also points to the fact that becoming Catholic is a continuous journey and not a single event.

OCIA is not a class. No quizzes, no grades. It is a journey of learning, love, and personal spiritual growth. Together with a team of dedicated parishioners, participants deepen their understanding of Catholic beliefs and practices. All are welcome, with no obligation to convert.

This is for those who are searching, have never been baptized, were baptized in another Christian tradition, were baptized Catholic but did not receive First Communion or Confirmation, or are Catholics with questions.

For those looking to explore the rich history, beauty, and spirituality that is the Catholic Church, contact Director of Faith Formation Lisa Belza at 440-835-2300 or email her at lbelza@stlads.org to begin your journey.

Each year, the OCIA relies on the generosity of parishioners who serve as sponsors and prep team members. Please contact Director of Faith Formation Lisa Belza at 440-835-2300 or email her at lbelza@stlads.org for more information on volunteer opportunities.
